Africa's most ambitious blockchain festival is no longer a Nigerian affair. It is going continental, and Cape Town is next.

Blockfest Africa, one of the continent's fastest-growing Web3 and blockchain festivals, is set to host its South African edition in Cape Town, marking its first expansion beyond Nigeria. The event will take place from May 5 to May 11, 2026, bringing together builders, investors, developers, and ecosystem leaders from across Africa and the global Web3 community.

Convened by Web3 educator and founder of Nirvana Academy, Samuel Olaoyenikan, popularly known as XeusTheGreat, Blockfest Africa has positioned itself as a platform focused on advancing blockchain education, cross-border collaboration, and real-world adoption across the continent.

The 2026 edition will be structured as two flagship events, Cape Town in May and Lagos in October, marking a significant escalation in the festival's operational ambition. The South Africa edition will combine a flagship conference with side events across the city, giving attendees more room to connect outside the main programme.

The expansion follows a domestic success story that has outgrown its origins. The 2025 Lagos edition attracted over 15,000 registrations and more than 12,000 total participants across physical and virtual attendance, positioning Lagos as a key hub for blockchain innovation and bringing together a mix of government officials, regulators, founders, and developers.

The choice of Cape Town is deliberately strategic. South Africa remains one of Africa's most active technology and developer hubs, with over 120,000 professional developers and approximately 22% of the continent's tech hubs, with much of this activity concentrated in Cape Town and Johannesburg, supported by a growing blockchain ecosystem and strong institutional and startup participation.

Organisers say the Cape Town edition is aimed at tapping into this developer base while creating new pathways for collaboration between Southern, West, East, and North African builders. Sponsors confirmed so far include Cake Wallet as Silver Sponsor, Wander With Abdul HQ as official travel partner, and Africa's Blockchain Club as the first community partner.

For Olaoyenikan, the move reflects a conviction about what Web3 community-building requires at this stage of Africa's blockchain journey. As he put it: "The alignments from physical meetups are x100. That's why Blockfest Africa destination South Africa is very important."

With 70% of attendees described as decision-makers from founders to government officials and policy influencers already established through the Nigeria Securities and Exchange Commission's participation in the 2025 Lagos edition, Blockfest Africa is rapidly graduating from festival to infrastructure. Cape Town in May is the proof of concept for that ambition.
